December Social 2023 Challenge Winners

Our annual Social was held on Wednesday, December 6th with an excellent turnout. Forty members and six guests attended, with 26 members, half the membership, participating in the challenges. Good eats, good conversations and many very respectable images entered into our annual friendly competitions, selected by popular choice of the polled audience. First and second place image finishers in each category are posted below. Congratulations to the winners, many thanks to all who participated. Many thanks also to those who helped put together such a successful evening!

2023 Grand Valley Image Battle Entrants

The Grand Valley Image Battle (GVIB) is an open competition held every fall with invited clubs in South-Western Ontario, including the Guelph Photographers Guild. This is a club competition, not an individual competition. The 2023 competition was hosted by GRIPS (Grand River Imaging and Photographic Society). Each club was limited to 20 submissions that hopefully included as many club members as possible. This year the GPG entered 20 images from 18 individuals. Entries were on a first come first served basis in an attempt to promote our less experienced members to participate in a friendly competition.

This year the Guelph Photographer’s Guild placed fifth out of sixth clubs who entered, much the same as our last effort. The Brant, GRIPS and Woodstock clubs placed first, second and third respectively with cumulative scores of 462.5, 452.5 and 440.5 out of a possible 600. The Guild’s cumulative score for the 20 entries was 434. Scores this year seemed to be 20 points lower per club all around, perhaps the outcome of live judging.

International Landscape Photographer of the Year – Andrew Morse

Past Vice-President and active member Andrew Morse entered five images into the International Landscape Photographer of the Year competition in early 2022. I am honoured to announce that two of Andrew’s images made it into the Top 101 Landscape Images that will be included in the ILPOTY annual book.  Only four Canadians had submissions that made it into the Top 101.  With two successful entries out of a field of over 3800, Andrew’s achievement is truly remarkable! Congratulations Andrew!

The Top 101 images of the ILPOTY 2022 competition can be seen here
