The best camera is the one that’s with you! Even a camera phone can make great photos, good enough for printing. But what do you need to achieve this with such a small sensor and lack of controls?

This presentation focuses on the strategies and techniques to create great images using  your phone as your camera.

Freeman Patterson – The Important Connection Between Art and Craft and Why It Matters to Photographers – January 21, 2026

Fluency in the photographic craft, i.e. ease in using photographic tools and techniques and knowing the building blocks of visual design plus useful guidelines for arranging them in picture space (composition) does not produce art any more than fluency in a language means that a person has anything of value to express. ART is conceived in our imagination, our dreams, and our passions. We use CRAFT to give it birth, that is visible or audible form. This presentation explores this important connection.

N.B.: This will be a ZOOM presentation.

“Photography When I Travel – Not Travel Photography”

April 16, 2025 — 7pm

– SCOTLAND 2024 (& maybe some from 2022)

— Doug England

Semantics? Perhaps, but I don’t consciously change my shooting to fit into a certain genre when I travel. I simply shoot subjects that move me visually, as I do when on an outing in Guelph or Tobermory or driving around Southern Ontario. It’s just the location that’s different and since I’m investing more time, effort and finances to get there, I invest more time and effort preparing and planning for what I will photograph. So I can get images like this !

This Bridge instantly became a “must see” when I first learned of it while researching locations for our trip. It was one of the first places added to a map of locations to visit for photography. Labeled “the oldest stone bridge in the highlands”, whether true or not, it certainly was something to see and a little challenging to find just the right composition.
